New Delhi: A Constitution amendment bill proposing 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state and Union Territory assemblies failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
The legislation, referred to as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was aimed at implementing women’s reservation ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Following the development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticised opposition parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and the Samajwadi Party, alleging that they did not support the bill.
In a post on X, Shah said the rejection of the bill was “reprehensible” and added that it would have provided 33 per cent reservation to women in legislative bodies.
He further said that the issue could have political implications in upcoming elections.
