Vasudevanallur: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday sharpened the BJP’s campaign pitch in Tamil Nadu, accusing the DMK and Congress of blocking the Women’s Reservation Act amendment in Parliament and alleging widespread corruption in the state. Addressing a rally, Singh said the opposition had failed to support the move to provide 33% reservation for women in legislatures, calling it a setback to women’s empowerment, while asserting that the NDA government remains committed to implementing the provision despite political hurdles.
He also launched a strong attack on the DMK government, referring to the alleged TASMAC scam and claiming that several ministers are under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), adding that corruption has weakened governance in the state. Singh promised that if the NDA is voted to power, it would eliminate corruption, improve law and order, and address issues such as the availability of illicit liquor, which he described as a serious concern for public safety.
Touching upon cultural issues, Singh referred to the controversy surrounding the lamp-lighting tradition at Thirupprankundram temple, assuring voters that the NDA would restore the practice and uphold local traditions. He further criticised the DMK over Tamil Nadu’s rising debt, alleging that borrowed funds were being misused, while also countering claims that the Centre has neglected the state by asserting that adequate financial support has been provided. Highlighting development initiatives, he pointed to the defence industrial corridor project as a major step toward boosting employment and economic growth in the region.
Drawing a contrast between the DMK and NDA using Tamil expressions, Singh portrayed the NDA as committed to development and integrity, while accusing the DMK of corruption and divisive politics. With the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls scheduled for April 23, he urged voters to reject the DMK and support the NDA, framing the election as a choice between “corruption and clean governance” and calling on citizens to back a government focused on transparency, development, and respect for cultural values.
