New Delhi: Narendra Modi on Friday said the re-election of Harivansh Narayan Singh as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a third consecutive term reflects the House’s trust in his experience and leadership.

Harivansh, a nominated member, was elected unopposed after a motion moved by Leader of the House J.P. Nadda was adopted by voice vote.

Congratulating him in the House, the Prime Minister described the re-election as a “stamp of approval” on his inclusive approach and dignified conduct.

He noted the significance of April 17, which coincides with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, and recalled Harivansh’s association with him.

Modi also highlighted Harivansh’s background in journalism, praising his writings for their depth and conviction. He referred to his column series “Hamara Sansad Kaisa Ho”, saying it offers valuable insights for Members of Parliament on maintaining parliamentary standards and responsibilities.

The Prime Minister commended his punctuality, disciplined lifestyle, and commitment to duties, noting that he regularly attends proceedings even when not presiding over the House.

He further underlined Harivansh’s engagement with youth, stating that he has conducted over 350 programmes in educational institutions since 2018 to promote awareness and participation in nation-building.

Modi also praised his utilisation of MPLADS funds for setting up research and development centres, including initiatives in language preservation, earthquake studies, river research, artificial intelligence, and business incubation.

He noted Harivansh’s continued connection with grassroots communities and participation in public and literary events across the country.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the role of the Rajya Sabha in the coming years and emphasised the importance of experienced leadership in guiding its proceedings.
