Kolkata, May 07: West Bengal witnessed a major political shock on Wednesday night after Chandranath Rath, executive assistant and close aide of senior BJP leader and probable Chief Minister face Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district.

According to reports, Rath was travelling through the Doharia area of Madhyamgram when unidentified motorcycle-borne attackers intercepted his vehicle around 10:20 PM and opened fire at close range. He suffered critical injuries and died on the spot.

The driver of the vehicle was also seriously injured in the attack and was immediately shifted to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital for treatment.

The killing comes at a time when West Bengal is already witnessing heightened political tension and incidents of violence following the BJP’s massive electoral victory, which brought an end to the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state.

The incident has triggered fresh concerns over law and order, with political reactions expected to intensify in the coming hours.
