Srinagar, May 25: In a shocking incident that has triggered outrage across Kashmir, a 12-year-old girl reported missing from Budgam district was found dead near her residence on Sunday morning, police said.

According to officials, the minor had gone missing from the Galwanpora area of Budgam on Saturday evening, following which police registered a kidnapping case and launched an intensive search operation.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Budgam Hariprasad K K said the child’s body was recovered approximately 200 metres from her home on Sunday morning and was immediately sent for post-mortem examination.

“Prima facie, the case appears to involve rape and murder. Relevant legal sections have been added to the FIR, and investigation is underway,” the SSP said.

The horrific incident has sent shockwaves across the region, with residents expressing grief and anger over the brutal crime.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly condemned the incident, calling it “shocking and deeply distressing.” Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, he said the tragedy should force society to reflect on the safety of children.

“Where are we headed as a society when even our young children are not safe?” the Chief Minister said, assuring full support to investigating agencies and demanding strict punishment for those responsible.

Meanwhile, Minister Sakeena Itoo visited the victim’s family in Budgam, expressing solidarity and assuring them of the government’s support. She called for a time-bound investigation and exemplary punishment for the culprits.

Police said legal proceedings have been initiated, and further investigation into the tragic case is in progress.
