Srinagar/Jammu, March 5: Jammu & Kashmir is witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures, with daytime highs soaring well above normal for early March. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures across the Union Territory are 6°C to 10°C higher than the seasonal average.

Srinagar recorded temperatures close to 20°C, while Jammu touched around 30°C, unusual for this time of year. The ongoing dry spell and weak western disturbances have resulted in below-normal rainfall and limited snowfall in higher altitudes.

Climate experts warn that reduced winter snowfall may affect river discharge, irrigation systems, hydropower generation, and drinking water supply during the summer months. Farmers in Kashmir’s orchard belt are also monitoring early bud development, as sudden temperature shifts could damage crops.

Environmental observers note that repeated winter warming trends highlight broader climate change impacts in the Himalayan region. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with official IMD weather forecasts as dry conditions are expected to continue in the coming days.
