NEW DELHI: Security has been intensified at key religious and heritage sites across Delhi following intelligence inputs indicating a possible terror threat, officials said on Saturday.

Heightened vigilance has been reported in areas around the Red Fort and parts of Chandni Chowk, both of which attract heavy footfall from tourists and devotees. According to officials, central intelligence agencies flagged the possibility of an explosion near the Red Fort, a high-security zone and one of the capital’s most visited landmarks.

Sources said intelligence inputs suggest that Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) may have included prominent religious sites in India on its target list. Specific alerts also indicated that a temple in the Chandni Chowk area could be among potential targets.

While the intelligence inputs are still being verified and assessed, security has been stepped up in and around sensitive religious locations and crowded public areas as a precautionary measure. Agencies have indicated that LeT could attempt an attack using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The alleged plot is reportedly linked to efforts by the group to avenge the February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, sources added.

Central agencies and Delhi Police are working in close coordination. Surveillance has been intensified through expanded CCTV monitoring, vehicle checks, and additional personnel deployed at vulnerable points. Bomb disposal squads, dog squads, and quick reaction teams have been placed on standby at strategic locations across the city.

The latest alert comes against the backdrop of the deadly car explosion near the Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which claimed 13 lives and left more than 20 injured. The blast occurred when a car laden with explosives detonated near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro station, triggering panic in the densely populated area and damaging several vehicles.

Authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious objects or activity to the police or emergency services. Officials emphasized that there is no cause for panic and described the heightened security measures as preventive in nature.

Further intelligence gathering and verification of the inputs are currently underway, an official said.
