JAMMU: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday appointed retired IAS officer Shantmanu as the State Election Commissioner for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to an S.O. 42 notification issued by M. Raju, Commissioner/Secretary, General Administration Department, the appointment has been made in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (3) of Section 36 of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989.

The notification stated that Shantmanu, IAS (Retd.), has been appointed as the State Election Commissioner for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir under the provisions of the said Act.

It further stated that he will hold office for a period of five years or until attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. The appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge, while the terms and conditions of service will be notified separately by the Government at a later stage.
