Jammu, April 06:
The Jammu Municipal Corporation has stepped up efforts to improve sanitation and strengthen the city’s drainage system by installing wire mesh over major drains across Jammu.

The initiative is being carried out under the directions of Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav, with the Health and Sanitation Wing actively working to tackle long-standing issues of waste disposal and clogged drains.

Officials said that in many areas, garbage and other waste materials are often dumped into open drains, leading to blockages, foul smell, and disruption in water flow. To address this, wire mesh is being installed as a preventive measure to stop solid waste from entering the drainage system.

The move is expected to significantly improve the flow of wastewater, reduce incidents of waterlogging, and contribute to a cleaner urban environment. Authorities also highlighted that such structural interventions are crucial for better waste management and urban hygiene.

Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the civic body has been running awareness campaigns to educate residents about responsible waste disposal. Citizens are being urged to avoid littering, stop dumping construction and demolition (C&D) waste in public areas, and refrain from using polythene or throwing garbage into water bodies like rivers, ponds, and drains.

To enforce compliance, strict penalties are being imposed. Between April 2025 and March 2026, the JMC collected fines amounting to approximately ₹14.39 lakh from violators. This includes ₹3.58 lakh for polythene use, ₹8.57 lakh for improper disposal of C&D waste, and ₹2.23 lakh for general littering. Additionally, over 3,000 challans have been issued and forwarded to courts for further action.

The Jammu Municipal Corporation has appealed to residents to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and avoid dumping waste into nallahs, emphasizing that public cooperation is key to building a cleaner and more sustainable city.
