JAMMU: The two-day literary and cultural conclave “Sahitya Sanskriti Samagam” was inaugurated by Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, at the University of Jammu, bringing together scholars, writers, artists, and students to celebrate the rich Jammu culture and literature and reinforce the importance of preserving the region’s cultural identity. The event, widely seen as a significant Jammu literary festival, focused on strengthening the cultural heritage of Jammu through literature, arts, and meaningful dialogue across generations.

Addressing the gathering, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha emphasized the need to safeguard Jammu’s vibrant cultural traditions and promote unity through literature and the arts. He highlighted that the region’s diverse cultural expressions and regional languages represent a shared heritage that must be preserved and passed on to future generations. According to the Lieutenant Governor, literature and cultural dialogue have the power to connect communities and foster mutual respect while strengthening the region’s social and cultural fabric.

The University of Jammu, which hosted the event, played a central role in bringing together scholars, artists, and intellectuals to promote regional literary traditions. Organizers described the conclave as an effort to create a platform where writers, academics, and cultural practitioners could exchange ideas and reflect on the evolving role of literature in preserving the identity of Jammu.

A major highlight of the event was a panel discussion exploring the socio-cultural ethos of Jammu, where experts examined the significance of regional languages such as Dogri, Punjabi, Pahari, and others in shaping the region’s literary heritage. Speakers stressed that these languages carry centuries of oral and written traditions and are essential for preserving the authentic voice of the region. Participants also discussed the importance of translating regional literature into Hindi and English so that the stories, poetry, and folklore of Jammu can reach a broader national and international audience.

The conclave also witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, with several literary competitions and interactive sessions designed to encourage young voices. These activities aimed to bridge generational gaps by introducing students to traditional literary forms while inspiring them to engage with contemporary cultural expression.

Adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the festival, the program featured performances by renowned artists, including a multilingual Mushaira and presentations of traditional folk arts. The performances celebrated the diversity of Jammu’s artistic traditions and highlighted the region’s long-standing connection with poetry, music, and storytelling.

The event drew the presence of prominent academics, journalists, writers, and public officials, reflecting the growing importance of such initiatives in promoting cultural dialogue and intellectual engagement in the region.

As the Sahitya Sanskriti Samagam continues, organizers and participants say the conclave serves as a powerful reminder that preserving Jammu’s identity requires active participation in literature, arts, and education. By bringing together scholars, artists, and young learners, the event underscores the role of cultural engagement in sustaining the region’s heritage and strengthening its literary future.
