AMARAVATI, Feb 23: In a major development that has reignited political debate in Andhra Pradesh, the state police on Sunday arrested senior IPS officer Sunil Nayak in Bihar in connection with the alleged custodial torture of Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker K. Raghurama Krishna Raju during the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government.

According to official sources, Nayak was taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that Raju was subjected to physical abuse while in police custody in 2021. At the time, Raju, then a Member of Parliament, had been arrested on sedition charges over alleged remarks against the state government. He later accused certain police officials of assault and custodial torture, allegations that triggered widespread controversy and legal scrutiny.

Police officials said a special team traced Nayak to Bihar and carried out the arrest after following due legal procedure. He is expected to be produced before a local court for transit remand before being brought to Andhra Pradesh for further questioning.

The case resurfaced after a fresh review of complaints and legal proceedings following the change in government in the state. Investigators are examining the role of officers involved in the arrest and custody of Raju, as well as compliance with custodial protocols and human rights safeguards.

Meanwhile, the development has sparked sharp political reactions. Leaders of the ruling coalition termed the arrest a step toward accountability and justice, while YSRCP representatives alleged that the action was politically motivated.
