Jammu, February 23:
Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav carried out an extensive inspection of Wards 63 and 65 on Sunday to assess civic issues raised by residents, particularly regarding sanitation, street cleaning, drainage maintenance and the need for new drainage infrastructure.
During his visit to Ward No. 63 in Chinor, Dr. Yadav inspected the condition of the main storm water drain following repeated complaints from locals about frequent overflows during the rainy season. Residents informed him that the overflowing drain disrupts daily life, causes severe water logging and leads to damage to adjoining houses, roads and lanes.
Taking serious note of the issue, the Commissioner directed the concerned engineering wing to conduct a detailed technical assessment of the existing drainage system and identify the root causes of the overflow. He instructed the Executive Engineer to prepare a comprehensive estimate for strengthening and remodeling the storm water drain to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and prevent future flooding incidents.
Dr. Yadav also reviewed the overall sanitation scenario in the area, inspecting the cleanliness of streets, lanes and public spaces. He stressed the importance of regular desilting of drains well before the onset of the monsoon to avoid water accumulation and inconvenience to the public.
Later, in Ward No. 65 covering Bantalab, Barnai and Ganganagar, residents highlighted the lack of adequate drainage facilities in several localities. They urged the Corporation to construct new drains and improve existing street infrastructure to address persistent water stagnation problems.
Responding promptly, the Commissioner directed the Executive Engineer to prepare a detailed project report along with cost estimates for the construction of new drains and improvement of streets in the affected areas. He emphasized that areas facing severe water logging and sanitation challenges must be prioritized.
The Commissioner also instructed Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma to intensify sanitation drives in both wards and ensure regular cleaning of drains and streets. He called for strict monitoring of sanitation workers’ attendance and deployment to enhance accountability and improve service delivery.
Deputy Commissioner (South) Sanjay Badiyal, Executive Engineer Rajesh Kumar, Chief Transport Officer Ranjan Sharma and other senior officials accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection. The team interacted with residents at multiple locations to understand ground realities and assured them of timely and effective action.
